History of the Rosa Damascena

To the old Greeks the rose was the flower of Aphrodite. She is the godess of the love, beauty, art and creativity. The goddess Aphrodite is also known as Venus. Because of his wedding the Shah Jehan build the Taj Mahal, including the nearby gardens of Shlimar. The canals around were filled with rose water and rose leaves. For the wedding the guests crossed the fragrant waters by boat. When the sun appeared at noon, and heated the rose leaves, it led to a natural distillation process. The oil from the rose went up to the surface. Since then, it is told; people in India are extracting rose oil. To the early Christian mystics, the rose was the flower of the Virgin Maria, a symbol of the divine love and of the unification of Maria and the Holy Ghost.

Winning the ethereal oil

The pure rose oil is a precious product. Before sunrise there are many people at the work, picking the roses from the bushes. They are brought to the distillation company in big bags. For 1-liter rose oil you need approximately 4 tons of roses (a full truckload). The mostly high-quality extraction of rose oil is by water vapour distillation. The rose leaves are heated in a kettle, by welling the flower leaves the ethereal oil becomes accessible. The ethereal oil goes from the flower leaves to the water, carried to the surface and evaporates. Water vapour with the ethereal oil ascends. The water vapour is cooled through which the ethereal oil is released and separated from the water. Oil is not soluble in water but floats on the surface. This way of distillation is precious and gives it the purest end product because there are no additions elements used. (This oil can be taken orally.) Beside this process you also obtain oil by hexane distillation. Hereby is hexane (poisonous gas) used to obtain oil from the rose leaves. The first product is a solid (wax-like substance) that after heating and “washing” finally becomes rose oil or also called: rose absolute. This oil is definitly not recommended for the aromatherapy because hexane parts will remain in the oil. This way of destillation is much cheaper. (This oil may never be used orally.).
